Cup Spotlight- Vitalogy
We are under three weeks to go until the Breeders’ Cup, and that means it’s time for us to become familiar with as many of the contenders in as many of the races as possible. And while so much can change between now and November 1st, I think Vitalogy, an expected entrant in the Juvenile Turf, will be a big part of my Friday wagers.
I don’t exactly love the fact that the 1 mile distance of the Juvenile Turf represents a cutback for Vitalogy. But he ran a big race at Woodbine in the Summer at this distance, and a review of the replay shows he had some traffic issues early and late. He rebounded with another big effort win the Bourbon at Keeneland when finishing 2nd to Peace Achieved, another top contender for this race. In the Bourbon, Vitalogy was widest of all turning for home and came up just short before galloping out ahead of the winner. Both North American stakes tries were impressive.
At Santa Anita, the question will be pace and trip. He’ll certainly benefit from quick early fractions. And given both of his most recent trips have been less than perfect, better luck would make him a major threat.
Are you more intrigued by the Euros in a race like this? That’s understandable. But note that Vitalogy finished 4th of nine in a Group 3 at York after defeating all 15 foes he faced in the career debut.
Lots to like.
