Distaff Threat?

Perhaps lost in the excitement of Monomoy Girl’s incredible season and Wonder Gadot’s romps north of the border against boys are the two dominating wins turned in by a filly who just might be on the upswing with a mind on upsetting them all in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff.

Red Ruby’s win in the Black Eyed Susan could conceivably be attributed to her handling the off-going better than the rest, as that was her second career stakes win over a sloppy, sealed racetrack in as many attempts. But the way she opened up and romped over a fast track in the Delaware Oaks, earning a 104 Beyer Speed Figure, has left me convinced she’s every bit as likely to take the Breeders’ Cup Distaff as her more accomplished sister sophomores.

At the moment, a visit to a European bet shop will give you the opportunity to plunk down a few Euros/Pounds on the following fillies and mares at the following prices…

Unique Bella 3/1
Monomoy Girl 7/2
Abel Tasman 5/1
Elate 9/1
Dream Tree 10/1
Midnight Bisou 10/1
Wonder Gadot 12/1
Red Ruby 16/1

Everyone else is 20/1 or higher.

Personally, I’m surprised that Midnight Bisou is a lower price than Wonder Gadot.  I guess that could be because there is speculation Wonder Gadot might keep running against the boys with her now targeting a third straight start against males in the Travers.  But as for Red Ruby, she is offering pretty good value against a group of girls that has struggled to put up Beyer Speed Figures north of 100.  Word is she is targeting the Alabama, although she hasn’t recorded a workout since the Delaware Oaks win.  So it’s possible I’ve completely wasted my time by writing this.  Wouldn’t be the first time.  But if she is healthy, the big girls better watch out.

UPDATE:  Annnnnnnnd she’s not healthy.
