Game Winner at 5.9-1, or Game Winner and some friends at 7-1?
I can’t be the only one who noticed that Game Winner closed at 5.9-1 in Pool 1 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager last weekend, while his sire, Candy Ride, could have been had at the slightly-more-generous price of 7.0-1 in the Sires Wager. Even the slowest among us can see that it would have made more sense to play Candy Ride since you get not only Game Winner as part of the 7-1 reward, but you get literally every other horse sired by Candy Ride. However, it’s important to note that given the paltry sum that went through the Sire Wager windows, a wager of $100 on Candy Ride would have dropped the odds down a bit closer to 6-1. But still, even a return of 5-1 or even 4-1 on Candy Ride to ultimately be the sire of the 2019 Kentucky Derby winner would make sense. Let’s take a look at just a handful of the horses you could have added to your army of potential Derby winners by Candy Ride…
Vekoma– Winner of the Nashua for George Weaver in his second career start.
Sparky Ville– Two-time winner, two-time Graded Stakes placed for Jeff Bonde
Kaziranga– Already has a win going two turns for Steve Asmussen.
Aransas– Winless in two stars for Michael Matz, but if he gets a chance to run on dirt…..
