You can’t help but be impressed by the Louisiana Derby win. Especially as someone, like myself, who likes Spinoff. He seems to be getting good at the right time, and visually he did all the right things in this big win.

If you want to look for something to “knock”, maybe you point to the fact that his win over Spinoff was his fifth start of his form cycle, while Spinoff had only raced once since August. The Fair Grounds is also By My Standard’s home track, and four of those starts came over that strip. So he had a home field advantage for sure.

And how do we feel about Goldencents as a sire for the Kentucky Derby? I am undecided there.

It’s undeniable that By My Standards is getting good at the right time. Is he good enough? Or can he become good enough? That remains to be seen. Wiseguy horses never seem to live up to their billing at Churchill Downs. Never. Maybe this one can be the one.
